Celebrating Grandma No No on her Birthday!

Today would have been my Grandmother’s 97th birthday. Sadly, she passed away last April and wont be here to celebrate this day. There are two ways I could approach today. I could be sad that she’s not here to wish happy birthday, eat cake with and celebrate with. I’m choosing to celebrate her life today and be happy that we were able to have such a close relationship.

From as early as I can remember, my grandma was my babysitter. Sometimes she would come to our house to watch us, but most often we would go to hers. She took us to school, picked us up and watched us when we didn’t have school. She would braid my hair and make sure we were dressed. She fed us breakfast, lunch and dinner if necessary. We drank tea and watched soap opera’s together. I was her informant, telling her what my brother and cousins were up to and tattling if they were doing something they shouldn’t have been doing.

My favorite memory was eating cut up bananas covered with cinnamon and sugar while watching Guiding Light together. She LOVED soap operas and got really into them! She would watch them from 11AM until Oprah came on at 4PM. They kept her very entertained.

Just like she helped me when I was younger, I was able to reciprocate and help her as she got older. When I got my license I began taking my Grandma to get groceries and where ever she needed to go when I was in town. When she began needing someone with her at all times, I would volunteer to help my mom and aunt whenever I could.

Today I’ll be thinking of her a lot and all of the memories we shared together. I definitely inherited her sweet tooth. ūüôā So I will plan on having a donut for breakfast in her memory. I may also try putting together a puzzle or clogging- which she always talked about but never really showed me what it was. One of her greatest qualities was the ability to make people laugh. There’s truly something special about those who can put a smile on your face! She didn’t always tell you what you wanted to hear- but she always told you the truth the way she saw it.

In the end of her life she always asked if she could go home, no matter where she was. Even if she was home. I hope she made it home. I hope she’s happy.

Beginning of My Birthday Week

It is tradition in our house to have a birthday week. The week and starts and ends in any 7 day period that surrounds your birthday. The birthday person gets to choose when they want their birthday week to start and end. This year, I chose for my birthday week to start on Saturday 1/14 and end the following Saturday. During your birthday week the other person does things to make the week extra special, you don’t have to cook or doing any cleaning if you don’t want to!

Friday we had date night! We went to the mall and did a little looking around and some shopping. Then we had dinner at Gordon Biersch. I had a delicious Grapefruit Moscow Mule. It was super refreshing. We split an order of the garlic fries. Those are something everyone around you must eat if you’re going to have some. Otherwise you will be the only person reeking of garlic! Then I had the California Cobb Flatbread. I took most of the flatbread home because I was so full from the fries!

We went to Revolutions¬†for some bowling! It was our first time there and I look forward to going again! Besides bowling, they have darts, ping pong and shuffle board. They have lots of projectors, projecting different sports, and a couple bars. The place is HUGE! I’m excited to go again sometime! Adam won all three games we played, but I got better as we played!

Saturday we did a lot of house stuff. We did laundry, cleaned, started fixing up the closet in the guest bedroom, and went grocery shopping and to Home Depot to get additional supplies needed to finish the project. I also ran and did some reading. Porter and I ran 6 miles outside. He loves running in this weather!

Sunday morning I started looking at different events that are hosting century bike events around NY and the surrounding states. Right now we are considering doing either the NYC Century or the Harpoon Point to Point Ride. Both look like great events! This will be our first time doing a 100 road bike event.

Adam and Porter joined me for my run on Sunday outside. We ran 7.3 miles. The sun was out and shinning and some points during the run, but the wind was cold!

After we got cleaned up and had lunch we went to Stout Beard Brewery. They recently re-did their tap room so we wanted to check it out! It looked really nice! They had five beers on tap, so we split a flight. My favorite was their Black Ben Wheat.

Then we went downtown to ice skate. I was nervous because I have not gone ice skating in a few years. After about 15 minutes I got the hang of it. Until I got more comfortable, it gave me a great excuse to hold Adam’s hand while we skated. ūüėČ Once it got a little bit darker, the Christmas tree and surrounding Christmas lights looked beautiful surrounding the ice. We skated for over an hour. Then it was time to go home and warm up!

Adam baked a chicken we had. We had the chicken for dinner last night and then the rest of the chicken will be used later in the week to make Coconut Curry Chicken Noodle Soup. I haven’t had this recipe yet, but it looks delicious and will be perfect to warm us up on these cold winter nights!

This morning Porter and I walked about 3 miles while I drank my coffee and listened to a podcast. It was very relaxing and a great way to wake up. Once we got back I jumped on the treadmill for 3.1 miles. Monday is usually a rest day for my training, but I think I want to take a rest day later in the week when my schedule gets busier, so I ran this morning. We are going into week 2 of marathon training.

New Year New Goals!

As we all begin this new year, people begin to think of how they can improve their lives to make 2017 the best year yet. Some people like to call these new ideas resolutions and some like to call them goals. Whatever you call it, I hope you not only decide on what you want to do but how you’re going to implement those ideas into your everyday¬†life and stick with it! I think it’s important not to make goals or resolutions too hard that it takes you too far out of your comfort zone. You may feel ambitious at the beginning of the year and fall short of reaching your goals which leads to feeling disappointed. Remember, it’s much easier to talk about doing something than actually doing it. However, I do believe that talking about your goals and sharing them with your friends and family makes you more likely to complete your objective. Continuously talking about it makes you continue to feel motivated to do it. If you’ve told everyone your going to do it you don’t want to go back and tell them you didn’t.

The goals I would like to accomplish this year are:

  • Complete a century ride
    Ever since Adam and I did a fundraiser road bike challenge I have wanted to complete a century ride. We had the option to do it during that challenge, but it was my first summer riding and I didn’t know if I would like road biking or how challenging 100 miles would be. Now that I know I enjoy road biking and have completed 75 miles in one day, I feel comfortable making the step up to 100 miles in one day.
  • Walk/hike one new trail every month
    There are so many great trails throughout New York State and I have only walked/hiked a small amount of them. It is so much fun to explore new areas. If you have any hiking trails you have loved in New York, let me know I would love some recommendations! I have a few trails on my bucket list for this year.
  • Try one new restaurant per month
    I’m stealing this goal from some of our friends who had this as a goal last year, I just love the idea of it! Adam and I don’t often eat out and when we do it’s a lot of fun to try a new place. The Syracuse area has a ton of restaurants we’ve never been to. We’ll take turns each month picking where to go.

That’s it! I didn’t want to have too many goals that I would forget them. I also wanted to make sure they were fun and enjoyable. When Adam and I talked about our goals the other day we wrote them down and stuck it on the fridge so we can see throughout the year.

On¬†Monday we walked a new trail. We took Porter for a walk downtown and did the Syracuse Creekwalk. It’s not a hiking trail per say, but it was a really nice trail through the city. We walked just under 3 miles each way. Before we started the walk we stopped at Freedom of Espresso¬†to get some coffee to keep us warm as we walked. I really enjoyed the trail. Along the trail they have some signs to tell you about the history of the area that you are walking by. It was chilly, so we kept walking to keep warm. In the summer I would like to do the walk again and read the information on the signs and take our time along the trail. They even have QR codes you can scan with your phone and it will pull up a video to get the information that way. I thought that was really neat!

So I already have January’s trail completed! Now what new restaurant should we try first? So many options!

Hello Everyone! It has been my dream for a few years now to start a blog so, I’m finally doing it!

It was about 3 years ago that I was frustrated with myself for being over weight, inactive and unhealthy. I decided to do something about it! For Christmas 2013, my husband and I gifted ourselves a Concept 2 rowing machine. My husband had enjoyed rowing for exercise in the past and I needed something I could do at my own pace to work up endurance.

That year, we set a goal to row to the Bahamas (figuratively). We mapped out the approximate amount of meters it was from Syracuse, NY to Nassau, Bahamas by water. We scheduled a cruise to the Bahamas in the early fall to celebrate our accomplishment. We hit our goal a couple weeks before we left for vacation! We were so excited for accomplishing our goal together. In addition to cooperatively reaching our goal, I lost 30 pounds in the process and had a yearning to continue my journey with healthy eating and exercise.

After a few months of rowing under my belt, my husband and I were walking our dog (Porter)¬†and my brother’s dog (Yeti)¬†who we were dog sitting at the time. We were trying ever so hard to tire our energetic young pups out! After a while of walking, I asked my husband if he was interested in attempting to run with the dogs. I had never been a runner in my life, but thought it might be worth a try. I truly surprised myself when we ran over a mile that day! It went by very quickly and I was excited to run again and again after that day¬†increasing my mileage as I continued to run.

The next year, I began training for my first half marathon. I was hooked on running and couldn’t get enough of it!¬†For Christmas 2014 my husband and I gifted ourselves a treadmill so that we could continue to run in the winter. Since then, I have run a few¬†10Ks, 2 half marathons and one full marathon. This May, I will be running my second full marathon in Buffalo, NY.

As I continue my journey with exercise, I have learned the importance of properly fueling my body to prepare it for all of the challenges I put it through. I am looking forward to sharing with you my journey as I continue this healthy life style I have learned to love!
